Mary, did you know that your baby boy would one day walk on water?
So begins the beautifully written song in which the question is pondered over and over, “Mary did you know?” referring to all the things Jesus would do and become. Of course the answer is no, Mary did not know. She wasn’t privy to the details. She actually receives minimal information when the angel visits her. (Luke chapter 1)
So, what did Mary know? It wasn’t what she knew, but Whom.
Mary knew the Lord! She knew His character. She knew His faithfulness.
She attests to this beginning in verse 47 of Luke chapter one. “My soul magnifies the Lord and my spirit has rejoiced in God my savior.” She continues to list his blessings and attributes through verse 55. This knowing of Him enabled her to say yes to whatever the Lord was asking of her even though she was frightened and confused. Even when what she did know, left her with many more unknowns.
And Mary said “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” (Luke 1:38 esv)
I want to be like that. When my day or my life is interrupted by what God is speaking to me, I want a heart that is surrendered to His will because I trust in the Who I know, more than the “what” that I don’t. What is happening? What will I do? What will the outcome be? What if it doesn’t work out? What if it looks different than I thought? What is happening??
If you can relate, let’s agree to spend our time getting to know Him better and better until we can say “ I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.” (2 Timothy 1:12)
Mary, did you know? No, she didn’t. But she said yes, and Christ was conceived in her and delivered to the world. May it be the same with us. Merry Christmas!!
